A Bronx man who pleaded guilty to firing at an NYPD officer in June 2012 has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Joseph Baez shot at someone he had an altercation with in June 2012, when Officer Nelson Vergara was walking home from work at his precinct. Vergara tried to stop the fight, but was instead shot numerous times by Baez. Vergara returned fire, and 19 rounds were shot altogether.

No one was killed in the shooting, but Vergara suffered serious injuries to his shoulder and leg. Baez addressed the room and expressed remorse for what he did, apologizing to Vergara and his family.

Baez's attorney asked that his client get psychiatric counseling while in prison, which the judge granted.
