Jones Beach lifeguard Tom Meehan spends the summers scanning the shore and the off-season repairing beach umbrellas in the Jones Beach “Canvas Shop.”
He told News 12 it’s “a real love to work with your hands.”
The umbrellas have been a staple of Jones Beach since it opened in 1929.
There are two patterns: one for lifeguards and one for beachgoers, who may rent them.
The iconic orange pattern can’t be found anywhere else: Jones Beach has the rights to it.
Hundreds of the umbrellas are repaired every year.
