To the dismay of thousands, the Jones Beach fireworks show is not going to be rescheduled.
The annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular was a bust Wednesday after the barge and tugboats used to carry the display from New York Harbor to the beach were unable to make it over 8 to 10 foot waves. Some Long Islanders say they are disappointed the show is not going to go on, but state park officials say it is just not feasible.
George Gorman, director of operations for the New York State Parks Department, says no rain date is usually scheduled because of the amount of resources needed to have the show. Gorman says with so many agencies involved, the only possible time to reschedule would have been the end of August. However, Gorman says attendance to the beach at that time is typically not in the high numbers.
A refund is being offered to the thousands who did venture out to the beach.
