With more than 250,000 people expected at Jones Beach State Park's fireworks display Wednesday, the State Park Police Department is implementing extra security to keep them safe.
Michael Balboni, New York State's deputy secretary for public safety, said security will be increased for large Fourth of July gatherings statewide.
The Jones Beach celebration, which State Park Police Major Richard O'Donnell called their "largest single-day event," warrants "the most complex protection plan we have."
There will be hundreds of extra security officers and police patrols and fenced in "safety zone" areas, which will allow emergency workers open space to get through, O'Donnell said.
State park police will "use explosive K-9s to screen areas of congestion and areas where there are highest concentration of public," O'Donnell said. "We use uniform and plain-clothed officers to surveillance areas with greatest crowds."
Police repeated the public is not permitted to bring alcohol on park grounds for the event.
