For one well-known foundation, giving gifts to children in need may be a little bit tougher this year.

John Theissen's name has become synonymous with giving, especially during the holidays. The Wantagh-based nonprofit foundation that bears his name has been providing joy for sick and underprivileged children for 22 years.

Theissen says donations are down this year, which could mean that some kids will not have a gift waiting for them under the tree on Christmas morning. He says that they have never said no to a child the entire time the foundation has been running, and he does not want this to be the first year.

According to Theissen, monetary donations are down 40 percent, and while the foundation has received 60,000 toys so far, that is actually 15,000 less than a normal year.

With his inventory depleted just before Christmas, Theissen has been forced to stop taking new requests. He's not giving up though, hoping for one last push this weekend.

He will be at the foundation's Wantagh headquarters on Saturday and Sunday until 5 p.m., and for a short time on Monday. He says anyone is welcome to come by and drop off some gifts. Monetary contributions can also be made.
