A Greenport man accused of killing a vineyard worker while driving drunk has pleaded not guilty.
John Costello, 71, was arraigned on DWI charges Tuesday morning.
Police say Costello's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed into oncoming traffic on Route 25 earlier this month.
Police say Costello crashed head-on into a car, killing passenger Bartolone Miguel, of Peconic. The driver was able to survive the crash.
Costello is the owner of Costello Marine Contracting in Greenport and is also a former Greenport Village trustee. He was freed on $250 bond.
Costello's attorney Bill Kehon told News 12 that his client was not drunk or speeding and blames the crash on the other driver, who was unlicensed.
Miguel leaves behind a wife and a 5-year-old son in his native Guatemala. His church is helping raise funds for his funeral and to have his remains returned home.
