A 5-year-old girl is being hailed as a hero after saving her mother's life.

Jillian Given was dog sitting at her grandparents' house when her mother, Elizabeth, experienced a diabetic episode. Jillian says she rushed to dial 911 and stayed on the phone with the operators until paramedics arrived at the home.

Medical personnel say Given made a quick recovery and is doing well after her daughter's life-saving decision.

Nesconset fire officials say October is Fire Prevention Month, and part of their program is to visit area schools and teach students how to confront an emergency using Jillian's footsteps.
