Jews on Long Island and around the world observed a ritual Wednesday that is performed once every 28 years.The ceremony is called the "Bessing of the Sun" and is referred to as the Birkat Hachamah.Tens of thousands of worshippers stood next to the Western Wallin Jerusalem's walled Old City, the holiest site where Jews canpray. Hundreds headed to the ancient desert fortress of Masada,while others prayed on the roof of a Tel Aviv high-rise andcongregated on roadsides. "God created the world in seven days," said Yona Vogel, one ofthe estimated 50,000 who attended the Western Wall prayers. "Onthe fourth day he put the sun into orbit and every 28 years itreturns to the original place that it stood when God created theworld."On Long Island, Jews met at Tobay Beach to mark the rare event. Louis Sroka, of Plainview, said he brought both of his sons with him and hopes they remember the special event. He said he also hopes to mark the next time it occurs in 28 years.
