Wednesday marks 126 years since an electric car built in New Jersey won the first auto race in the U.S.
The race was held in Rhode Island in 1896. Many people were skeptical of Andrew Riker’s invention.
However, the electric Riker car won the 5-mile race in about 15 minutes.
One of these historic cars can still be seen on display at the Ford Museum in Michigan.
The Riker Electric Motor Company and the Riker car were founded in Elizabeth.
