Residents doing business in and around Islip Town Hall had mixed feelings towards the resignation of Supervisor Pete McGowan.

Residents say they were aware that McGowan was under investigation for misusing campaign funds, but many said they were shocked that it brought about the end to his political career. They say McGowan has been a staple of Islip politics for more than 10 years and is a well-recognized figure around town.

Councilwoman Pamela Greene says there are three possibilities for filling McGowan?s position. She says the town board can appoint a replacement, a special election can be called by the governor or a special election can be held in November. Deputy Supervisor Jeanette Messina has been named acting supervisor in the meantime.
