Islanders owner Jon Ledecky says the team's fans are well-deserving of a new state-of-the-art arena that is coming to Belmont Park.
"You've been passionate supporters of the team, both on and off the ice. Today is a huge day for this franchise, and you deserve it more than anyone else."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at Belmont Park Wednesday that the team would be coming back to Nassau County after spending the past three seasons in Brooklyn.
"This is the best Christmas gift I could have gotten," said Tom Lofaso, a member of the Blue & Orange Army.
Claire Harding, a member of the team's Booster Club, said the relocation back to the Island will allow families who couldn't make it to Brooklyn to see the team again in action.
"There were so many families that couldn't go to Brooklyn. Now, they can just drive," she said.
Gov. Cuomo said during the announcement that he will be lobbying the NHL to bring games to the Nassau Coliseum when the Islanders' lease expires in Brooklyn.
