The balance of power could shift in Nassau County following Election Day.

Republicans have controlled the Nassau Legislature by just one seat for the past four years, a slim majority, but enough to help move forward County Executive Ed Mangano's agenda.

Nassau Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs says winning back the Legislature is key to getting the county's finances back on track. But Republican Party Chair Joe Mondello thinks the GOP will hold onto power and maybe pick up a seat, especially with its message of no tax increases.

Political analyst Mike Dawidziak says Republicans helped themselves considerably by redrawing the legislative district lines.

For years, Nassau County was a Republican stronghold, but analysts say that has changed, in part due to shifting demographics. There are now about 40,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in Nassau.

Both Democrats and Republicans are counting on their county executive candidate to bring out the vote this Election Day.

There are currently four open seats in the Nassau Legislature.
