There is a battle in Island Park over who will pay to fix bulkheads that were destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

Pauline Calvagno says the bulkhead across the street from her home in Island Park was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. Calvagno said she foot the $84,000 bill for repairs after being told by NY Rising that she would be reimbursed. Over two years later, Calvagno says she hasn't seen a penny from NY Rising, the state-run storm recovery program.



It's a similar story for many neighbors on the street, including Patti Ambrocia, who lives a few doors down. She says she spent about $58,000 on repairing her bulkhead after being told she would be reimbursed by NY Rising. To date, Ambrocia tells News 12 that she's only received about $7,000 back.

Neighbors who spoke with News 12 claim NY Rising is now denying them funds originally promised because there's a street between their homes and the canal. A spokesperson for NY Rising says any money awarded is contingent on an eligibility review, and can be reduced or rescinded if an application is later deemed ineligible.

State Sen. Todd Kaminsky says he will fight for the residents. He says it's unfair and that the bulkhead is essential to keeping the homes safe.
