Woman assaulted while leaving Nassau County supermarket

A man has been arrested for assaulting a woman at random in Nassau County on Tuesday afternoon.

Samuel Hankins, 27, of Rosedale, hit the victim as she left the Stop & Shop in North Lawrence, according to police.

The incident happened around 12 p.m. outside of the supermarket located at 253-01 Rockaway Turnpike.

Detectives say the 37-year-old was struck in the back of the head and the arm with a blunt object as she exited the store.

Hankins fled the scene on foot but was located nearby and arrested without incident.

The woman was taken to a local hospital by Nassau police ambulance and is listed in stable condition.

Nassau police tell News 12 Hankins and the victim did not know each other.

The Queens man will be charged with second degree assault at his arraignment on Wednesday.
