Some Long Islanders are driving into the future with sun-powered electric vehicles.

Island Park-based EmPower Solar has options for people who wish to charge their electric vehicles through solar panels on the roof.

Experts predict electric vehicles will outsell conventional ones within 10 years. And not only will most cars on the road be electric, they say 50 percent of vehicles in the U.S. will be running on solar power by 2030.

Martin Nix, who owns Wantagh Mitsubishi, agrees and says customers who want to go green have led to success for the dealership.

Georgia Meckes, of Long Beach, drives an electric vehicle that's powered by her home's solar panels. She says it's her duty to make that choice for the future of her children and community.

It's expected that many electric vehicle charging stations will eventually be energized by solar panels.
