Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island, is doing its part to help military members and their families during the holiday season.
Island Harvest was in Yaphank on Thursday handing out donated frozen turkeys and all of the trimmings to veterans.
Veterans who were at the event said they were thankful, and without the help, they may have not have been able to afford a holiday meal on their own
"We are very happy to be here for our third year. We are helping about 100 families and the veterans each year with the turkeys and trimmings. We know that many of them are choosing between utilities and transportation over food because it's the last resort for many people," says Allison Puglia, of Island Harvest.
Puglia says it's difficult for veterans who have given their lives for our country to stand in a food line and ask for food, so the organization tries to make it as easy as possible to provide food in a safe and respectful environment.
All of the turkeys handed out Thursday were donated through Operation Hope, which provides food and social services to veterans and military families and through local food drives.
