Police say a young mother died after taking the brunt of the impact from an SUV that swerved into a crosswalk where she was walking with her son Friday night.
Victoria Caudros, 29, and her son, Nicholas, 6, were crossing near Doughty Boulevard when they were struck by an SUV on Morris Avenue in Inwood.Witnesses told police that before the SUV driver hit the two, Caudros pushed her son from the path of the speeding vehicle. The same witnesses say the SUV knocked Caudros to the ground and rolled over her as someone on the street chased the truck to get a license number.Caudros was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where she later died. Her son received minor injuries and is with his father.Family friend Harold Monje says Caudros immigrated from Colombia eight years ago with dreams of building a better future for her family.Police are describing the hit-and-run vehicle as a maroon or brown SUV with dark tinted windows and chrome wheels.
