A Centereach doctor is facing federal charges for allegedly prescribing highly addictive prescription pain pills to patients who did not need them.

Investigators say the DEA started investigating Dr. Michael Randall last year after getting information from two Long Island pharmacists. Investigators say Randall wrote over 7,300 prescriptions for oxycodone over a 2 ½-year period, totaling more than 1 million pills.

Prosecutors say Randall, who had run the family medical practice since 2005, was prescribing the drug to patients who he knew had been undergoing treatment for substance abuse, as well as a number of patients who Randall was aware had suffered nonfatal overdoses in the past.

Randall's attorney told News 12 that his client is in "terrible distress" over the allegations and said the health and well-being of his patients have always been Randall's priority.

If convicted, Randall could face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
