Nearly 100 firefighters responded to a massive blaze in Elmont that displaced 10 people Sunday.
Elmont officials say seven departments rushed to the fire Saturday before midnight on Roquette Avenue. A two-apartment home, garage and cottage were charred in what officials suspect is arson. Witnesses say they heard a big bang and explosion. Investigators say the noise may have been a transformer and they say the fire was likely set outside the garage.
Firefighters say they were initially told a baby was trapped inside, but they discovered all occupants escaped safely and no one was injured. Anyone with information about the fire is urged to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
