An inmate at an upstate prison is facing new charges for allegedly planning to kidnap and assault former Nassau Assistant District Attorney Fred Klein.
Chandran Nathan was indicted in Mineola court on Tuesday for allegedly offering to pay someone $10,000 to kidnap and beat up Klein, the prosecutor in his murder trial two decades ago.
Nathan was found guilty of murder in 1993 and is currently in prison. A jailhouse source who tipped off authorities said Nathan also wanted Klein to exonerate him from his crimes on videotape.
Nathan was found guilty of shooting Shaleen Wadhwani in his Manhasset home in 1993. Nathan was allegedly obsessed with the man's fiancee, Hema Sakhtani, who committed suicide two days after learning of her fiance's murder.
Nathan's attorney says his client may have some psychological issues.
"He had exhausted all of his appeals, and I think he should be examined to determine his stability," says attorney Steven Gerard Murphy.
Klein left the DA's office in 2006 and didn't want to comment about the new charges. The judge ordered a temporary order of protection for Klein.
The Nassau County District Attorney's Office expects Nathan will stay in the Nassau County Jail until the case is resolved. In 1994, Nathan was sentenced to 37 years to life. He faces up to seven more years in prison if found guilty of the latest charge.
