? The fatal shooting rampage that took place at Northern Illinois University has worried college students on Long Island.
Police say a gunman, identified Friday as 27-year-old Steven Kazmierczack, walked into a geology class at the school and opened fire. He killed five students before taking his own life. Kazmierczack graduated from NIU in 2006 and was regarded as an excellent student.
A motive for the shootings is not known. However, investigators say Kazmierczack had recently stopped taking medication and became erratic.
A number of students were wounded in the shooting, some critically.
The deadly rampage has sent shockwaves through Long Island college campuses, including Hofstra University. Students there say the NIU shooting and other recent incidents, including the Virginia Tech massacre, have chipped away at the sense of security they have on campus.
?We tend to think that things like [the NIU shooting] don?t happen here, but it could really happen anywhere at any given time,? says Hofstra junior Baron Newton. ?It kind of makes you uneasy going to class?you don?t know what?s going to happen.?
As Northern Illinois University students try to comfort each other following the tragic deaths of their classmates, college students everywhere else will attend classes with an uneasy feeling in the back of their minds.
?It?s very unsettling,? says Hofstra graduate student Danielle D?Aguanno. ?It kind of makes you wonder what kind of world we?re living in.?
