Undocumented immigrants in 10 Long Island communities were taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody during a five-day roundup.
In total, 31 arrests were made throughout the metropolitan area from May 19 to 23.
Arrests on Long Island were made in Elmont, Freeport, Hempstead, Hicksville, New Hyde Park, Roosevelt, Valley Stream, Brentwood, Central Islip and Huntington Station.
Of the 31 arrests, officials say more than 26 were convicted criminals or had criminal charges pending, and more than 29 had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the U.S.
Officials also say the arrests included nationals from Honduras, Guatemala, China, India and Ukraine, among other places.
Immigration advocates say the surge in arrests is merely a public relations move by ICE and that the agency has a negative impact on the immigrant population.
