Gas prices are at an all-time high on Long Island, but there is some relief coming next month for New York drivers.
The state will start a gas tax holiday June 1 and will run until the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Nassau and Suffolk counties will cap its portion of sales tax on gas at $3. The rest will not be taxed.
Some Nassau Democrats wanted to cap gas taxes at $2 and extend the hold on gas tax through March.
However, the proposal was shut down even though some legislators say the county can afford the revenue loss.
"We, at the county level, need to do as much as we can for our residents," says Leg. Arnold Drucker. "We have a situation, everyone is hurting."
According to AAA, a gallon of regular unleaded is averaging $4.55 on Long Island, which is costing some like Fabrizio McMillian $75 or more to fill up their car.
"We need a small break, I'm an everyday commuter, back and forth to work, running errands," McMillion, of Hempstead, says. "I absolutely need the break."
Other Long Islanders say they are rethinking their trips in the car to save money.
"Mother's Day cost me another 300 miles of driving," says Bill Russo, of Dix Hills. "Do the math on that and it's not cheap. It's tough, a lot of people have to make tough decisions. It's not fair for families, it's just hard for everyone."
