A Huntington Station family is searching for answers after they say a driver crashed into their 68-year-old loved one and then fled the scene.
Police say the crash happened Wednesday night at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lantern Street. Video captured the moment a red car crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into Fidel Cuadra’s vehicle.
Cuadra told News 12 he yelled for the driver to stay and wait for police, but the driver took off. His daughter, Angelina Ortiz, said the crash destroyed his only form of transportation to his weekly medical appointments. Cuadra is a kidney transplant recipient who has spent the past 17 years on dialysis.
Ortiz said police told her father to keep the broken pieces of the other car, including part of a bumper and fragments of red paint. She also noted the video shows a distinctive smiley-face charm hanging from the driver’s side of the suspect’s vehicle.
Police are still searching for the driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
