The sagging economy may stop the Town of Huntington from spending tax dollars on a day laborer hiring site next year.
Town Supervisor Frank Petrone says Huntington is looking to tighten its budget and cut costs wherever possible. Funding for the site is currently split between the town and two nonprofit organizations.
Town officials are making efforts to pay for the site in Huntington Station with private money. According to Petrone, plans to phase out public funding of the hiring site will be discussed next month.
In 2007, the site cost Huntington taxpayers more than $100,000.
