Hundreds gathered Friday for a vigil to remember the Lindenhurst mom killed on Mother's Day.
Diane Aluska, 55, gave up her life to save her 16-year-old daughter. Aluska and her daughter, Jenna, were walking home from church when a car barreled toward them in reverse. Police say Aluska managed to push Jenna out of the car's path.
Those at the vigil paid tribute to Aluska by decorating a village square with pink ribbons, a symbol of her victorious battle against breast cancer. Aluska's co-workers and boss at the Town of Babylon Clerk's Office said she had a heart of gold.
"She's deeply missed," says Babylon Town Clerk Carol Quirk. "She was a very caring individual, awesome, awesome mother. She loved her children. She loved her family and this is just a tragedy."
In addition to the vigil, there are several fundraisers planned. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the fundraisers will go to Aluska's family.
Aluska's family members thanked everyone for supporting them.
