Suffolk County officials have signed an agreement that will allow a cable from an offshore wind farm to make landfall at Smith Point County Park and run through the Town of Brookhaven.
The 17.5-mile cable is expected to run up the William Floyd Parkway and eventually west to a substation in Holbrook. There, it will feed clean energy to Long Island homes.
The Town of Brookhaven is set to get the bulk of the nearly $170 million benefit package from the deal.
"The offshore wind here that is being built is ultimately going to be powering hundreds of thousands of homes," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. "Huge project and a huge impact."
The nearly 100 turbines will be located in the ocean around 50 miles from Smith Point County Park's coastline.
The project, which is set to begin this spring, is expected to take up to five years to complete.
