Temperatures are expected to climb over the next few days, and it’s important to know how to beat the heat.
Nassau and Suffolk counties are opening cooling centers for the next few days. A full list of the centers can be found here.
Officials recommend residents to spend more time in air conditioning, to drink plenty of water and to check on elderly neighbors.
All town of Hempstead pools and beaches will remain open until 7 p.m. – an hour later than usual.
"We want residents to stay cool, particularly our seniors as we don't want them to be outside," says Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. "Go visit our cooling centers. Got to our great beaches. We have four miles of beaches here in Point Lookout. We're gonna have 200 lifeguards looking out for you.
Dr. Edward Mintz, of NYU Langone, says signs of heat exhaustion include muscle cramps, fatigue, nausea and dizziness.
PSEG says electric bills may be higher as households use their air conditioner. The company recommends keeping indoor temperatures at 78 degrees.
PSEG also says to use major appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, in the morning or evening, not in the middle of the day.
