An aging Patchogue bridge will be getting a facelift, after the state Department of Transportation called it "functionally obsolete."

The Hospital Road bridge, which straddles Sunrise Highway, is 60 years old. Officials announced Friday that they obtained $26 million to make the bridge wider and safer for drivers.

Chief Miglino, of the South Country Ambulance squad, says the bridge is a lifeline to Brookhaven Hospital, which is a level two trauma center. Miglino and other emergency workers agree the bridge should have been replaced years ago. He says the bridge is extremely dangerous.

Rep Lee Zeldin (R - Shirley) says work on the bridge will begin in 2017 and may take more than a year.
