Angry homeowners near Stony Brook University voiced their concerns Wednesday night about houses being bought and rented to students.

Nearly 200 people filled the auditorium at W.S. Mount Elementary School to discuss the issue facing their community. The meeting was organized by Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners, a group dedicated to maintaining the integrity of housing near campus.

Bruce Sander, the group's president, says landlords are buying homes, illegally subdividing them into multiple apartments and then renting them to local college students.

Sander says the homes have a slew of fire code violations, parking issues and a party problem on the weekends.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says the root of the issue is the construction within the homes that he says violates zoning codes.

Stony Brook University officials say they're doing their part to educate parents and students about the dangers of illegal housing, and will not advertise illegal apartments.
