The town of Riverhead asked residents for a second day Sunday not to water their lawns due to firefighting concerns.
The water district wants sprinklers shut off to ensure that there's enough water for emergencies. "Right now, we should be OK for an average house fire," said fire Chief Bob Zaweski. According to Zaweski, the town also has a tanker filled with thousands of gallons of water on hand and has contacted local fire departments.
Officials have not said how long the watering restrictions will be in effect, but said water reserves are building back up.Most homeowners are giving town officials their full support. "I think it's a good idea," said Irl Krause. "If the water level's low, we have to do something about conserving water."
