One year after the federal Department of Homeland Security made a controversial decision about anti-terrorism funding for New York, the bureau reversed course Friday.
Federal funding for New York's homeland security efforts were greatly reduced in 2006, a move that was met with overwhelming criticism in major cities. For 2007, New York and New Jersey will split a larger amount of the pie. More than half of the federal government's anti-terror grants will go to the six greatest metropolitan areas. Last year, several smaller cities in the Midwest received what some called a disproportionate amount of funding compared to the risk of an attack.
New York's new homeland security head Michael Balboni says the framework of the distribution seems to benefit Long Island and the New York metropolitan area, but he will withhold final judgment until learning of the exact dollar amounts.
