? A hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a doctor in Roslyn Heights last year was sentenced to three to nine years in prison Monday.
Mayer Sadian, of Roslyn Heights, was convicted of criminally negligent homicide for hitting Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, 48, in July of 2007. His damaged car was found months later in his parents? garage.
According to accident reconstruction and witness testimony, the gold Honda Accord was traveling at more than 60 mph when Dr. Siegel was hit. The doctor was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the sentencing, Sadian spoke publicly about the accident for the first time. He wiped away his tears and apologized to the Siegel family saying, "I will never forgive myself for the pain I have caused. I know I acted foolishly.?
Sadian, 20, was acquitted of second-degree manslaughter charges in Siegel?s death. Jurors tell News 12 Long Island that all 12 of them could not agree, so they settled on the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide to avoid a hung jury.
