The 104-year-old Huntington Lighthouse is in need of $180,000 in donations to continue restoration work or risk a setback that would compromise the project.
According to the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, the group has raised more than $500,000 and secured a $250,000 matching grant from the state to help the restoration effort.
That money raised for the construction has run out, and to make matters worse, a gaping hole was recently found underneath the lighthouse landing.
The damage discovered on the platform has threatened the Lighthouse Musical Festival – which brings in thousands of dollars. The festival is scheduled for Labor Day weekend and usually draws thousands of boaters.
The Preservation Society has started an online fundraiser to help pay for the remaining repairs. It has raised $10,000 in just over one week.
