Organizations across Long Island are trying to make life easier for military service members once they return from overseas.

More than 300 veterans attended the "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair at the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center on Wednesday. This event, held in Farmingdale for the third time, is open to military members only.

The national unemployment rate for veterans was at 6.4 percent last month, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And although the figures are improved over last year's numbers, Army Capt. David Myones says the economy remains one of the biggest obstacles veterans face in finding a job.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-3rd District) has proposed legislation to match post-Sept. 11 veterans and GI Bill recipients with community colleges for training and other opportunities.
