Strong winds knocked out power for thousands across Long Island this morning.
The wind knocked down a utility pole in Fort Salonga, taking power lines with it.
People in Uniondale say they lost power for hours. Will Cortez of Uniondale says power went out on his block at 7:30 Monday morning.
"I looked in the back, there was a tree that fell on the line, a big tree, cut power off," he said.
As PSEG is working to restore power to those left in the dark, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is helping people left out in the cold.
Street outreach coordinators are outside on this cold day checking in with people who don’t have a place to go.
They let them know where they can go to stay warm and provide them with the essentials.
“We’re going over our clients that are unhoused, following up with them making sure they have their needs, if they need gloves, blankets, food," said Robert Weinmann, with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.
News 12 spoke with one person who says he’s staying warm today at the warming center at Mitchel Field in Uniondale.
The warming center will be open overnight for those who need a warm place to stay.
PSEG says it has restored power to more than 17,000 customers since Sunday morning.
