Suffolk County officials announced a startling increase in the number of newborns born addicted to heroin or prescription drugs over the past six years.
Officials say there were 93 cases recorded in 2009, compared to 171 in 2014.
Dr. Warren Zysmann, the executive director of ACI Rehab in Smithtown, says more services are needed to combat the dramatic rise.
"Provide more counseling services, medical treatment services for the mother, prevention services prior to the pregnancy and then treatment services for the fetus and the young person growing up," says Zysmann.
Suffolk lawmakers say they have also been in touch with their counterparts in Nassau in the hope of tackling the growing epidemic together.
