The tenant of a burning home in Brentwood is being hailed a hero Thursday after saving a 3-month-old trapped inside.
The baby?s mother, Wendy Maldonado, is thankful that her little girl is alive. Maldonado's baby, Haylie, became trapped inside a back bedroom when a fire engulfed her home on Suffolk Avenue. A tenant, who lived in the home, ran back inside to save Haylie. He suffered severe burns on his hands and neck and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Fire officials say the fire broke out in the basement of the home, which was being used as a multi-family dwelling illegally. The owner, Arturo Maldonado, received two summonses from the Town of Islip.
Meanwhile, the Haylie and her mother will be staying with family as she tries to pick up the pieces.
