Hermine caused concern about dangerous rip currents in the Atlantic, prompting officials to ban swimming at ocean beaches.

Long Beach emergency crews say they were busy trying to keep swimmers out of the rough surf on Labor Day. Swimming was also banned at Jones Beach, and New York City banned swimming and surfing altogether at its beaches.

Lifeguard captain Don Kramer says most beachgoers followed the rules in Long Beach, but a few were still trying to stick their toes in the water.

Surfing, however, was allowed, so many were seen taking advantage of the swells. But only experienced and well-equipped surfers were allowed at Long Island beaches.

Lifeguards tell News 12 that swimmers who refuse to exit the water could be arrested or ticketed by police.

A coastal flood advisory was in effect for southern Nassau County until 3 p.m. Tuesday.
