Parents in the Hempstead School District rallied Thursday night over an unexpected change to the school board.

There is a vacant seat on the board, which current board members say they'd like to fill by appointment. However, many in the community say they should have a say in who fills the empty spot.

Parents are calling on board members to hold a special election, a request Board President Betty Cross says would be too costly.

Residents have been urging a special election since school board trustee Waylyn Hobbs resigned in July.

Parents say they will come up with a new plan of action at their next meeting.
