Officials are increasing security measures around Hempstead High School after a boy was fatally stabbed on a handball court.
Sophomore Michael Alguera, 15, died of his injuries Saturday. Alguera and two friends were confronted by eight men at the court Friday afternoon, ordered to stand against the wall and were robbed, police say.
School officials say they will demolish the handball court and cordon off the area as a result of the incident. A fence around the court will also be repaired and students will no longer be allowed to play at the location. Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne Hall says patrols will also be increased in the area.
Some parents say increased security is a step in the right direction, but that getting rid of the handball court is going one step too far. However, security was already stepped up right before the incident occurred. Mayor Hall says 10 new security guards were hired just the day before.
Police say they are still searching for the men involved in the stabbing.
The school district says grief counselors will be on hand for the rest of the week.
