A Hempstead mother was arrested after allegedly stabbing a dog in the face.
Stephanie Penado was charged Wednesday with aggravated cruelty to animals after prosecutors say the 26-year-old "intentionally stabbed her sister's dog several times with a large kitchen knife on his face and back."
Penado stabbed the dog because she said she was upset that the husky bit her 1-year-old son, according to police.
Penado pleaded not guilty to the charges and was ordered to have a mental health evaluation. She is due back in court Friday.
Penado's sister was upset to see News 12 outside her Linden Place apartment Wednesday and threatened to call the police. She did not comment about the case.
Some neighbors who spoke with News 12 off camera called the alleged stabbing an outrageous overreaction. Others said that they may have done the same thing if the dog had bit their child.
The dog is currently being treated at North Shore Animal League.
