Dozens turned out Friday near Village Hall in Hempstead to kick off the event Wear Orange Weekend to honor victims of gun violence.
Friday marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
The event was organized by Stephanie Draine of Life After Loss A.N.D.R.E. Draine's 26-year-old son Andre Grayson was shot and killed in 2014.
"In our communities we're impacted so much by the gun violence nationwide right now, and I just thought this was with a lot of meaning and purpose to have this event today to bring awareness to the community," says Draine.
The support group Life After Loss meets the third Thursday of the month in Kennedy Memorial Park in Hempstead.
