A Hempstead elementary school scored big Wednesday, thanks to the help of two organizations.
Joseph A. McNeil Elementary School students got $16,000 of sports gear and equipment, thanks to the Geico Philanthropic Foundation and the organization Good Sports.
Principal Veronique Bailey says the donation helps students on and off the field.
"[It gives them] the opportunity to grow in a sport,” she said. “Grow in their athleticism, which also helps the brain work."
Included in the donation is lacrosse equipment for students ahead of spring lacrosse clinics at the school.
"It's a great opportunity for our students to secure scholarships and work on team-collaborative behavior, which we can bring into the classroom to enhance our academic performance,” said Bailey.
Fifth grader Shannon Williams was one of the first students to enjoy some of the new gear.
"Well, I feel very excited. I'm happy that I was one of the people that got picked to play," she said. “I just want to say thank you very much for giving me the equipment and I appreciate you."
Principal Bailey says these donations mean so much to the entire school community.
"We are giving everything to our children because our children deserve it all,” said Bailey. "That's what those donations do for us. They may not be part of our initial fiscal budget, but they're some things that our children can enjoy."
Bailey says students received backpack and school supply donations from Geico earlier this year as well.
