A celebration hosted by the Village of Hempstead and Operation Get Ahead ushered in the start of Kwanzaa on Wednesday.
Kwanzaa began in the 1960s as a means to connect those of African descent to culture and tradition. It's based on seven principles that include creativity, faith, work and responsibility to one's community.
Wednesday's principle was "umoja," or unity. The event featured drum performances and a ceremony to pay homage to African ancestors.
Organizers say they want others to understand that the principles of Kwanzaa can have a positive impact on any community.
Kwanzaa is celebrated through New Year's Day.
