They have served our country. But some suffer from PTSD. And a music program in Suffolk County is helping to heal our heroes in this special News 12 Long Island report.
Every Thursday, a group of veterans gets together to learn guitar and play some music.
"It's camaraderie. You get together with your vets, play songs and it's a good program," says Chuck Simmons, of Amityville.
For many, the music program is a release. A way to deal with PTSD.
The music program is part of Project 9 Line. The nonprofit organization helps veterans integrate back into civilian life.
"They talk to each other, and that is the power of it - opening up the lines of communication where they're expressing their challenges, their struggles," says music director Dennis O'Donnell.
Project 9 Line also offers yoga, martial arts and comedy classes.
