HEADLINES: Peekskill murder sentence, funeral set for hit-and run victim, Danskammer Energy appeal

Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
A Peekskill man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for a fatal shooting last year. Michael Jenkins, 22, was convicted of second-degree murder, manslaughter and robbery. The District Attorney's Office said Jenkins met with 27-year-old Emmanuel Jordan, of Mohegan Lake, to purchase narcotics. During the exchange, Jenkins shot Jordan multiple times, robbed him and fled the scene. Jordan was found several hours later. During his sentencing, the victim's mother told Jenkins "You have scarred me -- my family, friends and a community where my son was born and raised."
In a matter of days, the victim involved in a deadly hit-and-run in Haverstraw will be laid to rest. Police say 43-year-old Sugundo Landi-Lucer was driving on Route 9W when he struck Juan Alberto Germosen, then fled the scene. Lucer pleeaded not guilty to charges of criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Meantime, a wake will be held for Germosen at George Holt Funeral Home in Haverstraw on Sunday. His funeral be held on Monday.
An energy company will appeal a ruling that denied a required air permit for a natural gas-fired power plant in Newburgh. Danskammer Energy says it disagrees with the denial saying the State DEC is holding them to standards that don't even exist. The plant on the Hudson has been the scene of numerous protests including a flotilla last August. The Danskammer project would involve upgrading and modernizing the firm's existing plant. But opponents say the changes would result in more air pollution and other harmful effects to the environment.
