Hauppauge parents voiced their concerns over a new homeless shelter at a school board meeting Tuesday night.

Parents are worried about the swelling number of students entering Hauppauge schools from the shelter located near the LIE. They say class sizes are already maxed out and that the addition of more students is a drain on resources.

Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss insists the district is more than able to absorb the influx.

Yet parents say their gripe is with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, not school administrators. County law dictates that no more than 12 families are permitted in any one homeless shelter. According to a resolution drafted by County Legislator John Kennedy, there are 96 families living in this particular shelter.

Kennedy will host a town hall meeting on the issue this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Suffolk County Legislature.
