On the heels of the largest jackpot in Mega Millions lottery history, one Hauppauge family celebrated its own big score at a press conference Wednesday at the Garden City Hotel.
Edward and Donna Mikkin won $34.5 million in a Feb. 10 New York Lotto drawing. Their winnings pale in comparison to the $370 million jackpot won by two as-yet-named ticket holders, but the money suits them just fine. Ed, a Pepsi truck driver who has since quit, purchased the winning Quick Pick ticket at a St. James gas station.
"It was shocking, unreal," said Ed Mikkin. "It was a beautiful experience."
The couple has two sons, Eddie and Chris.
To celebrate, the family will bring about three dozen guests to Disney World, the site of Ed and Donna's honeymoon 25 years ago.
The Mikkins will take home $12 million after taxes.
