Long Islanders played handball in Franklin Square Saturday to honor fallen friends and prevent others from taking their own lives.
Gino D'Angelo and Dan Babich, both of Franklin Square, took their own lives at different times back in 2015. Since then, their friends and family have had a tough time coping without them.
“When you lose your son, you lose part of yourself,” says Elizabeth D'Angelo. “Your heart is broken and it cannot be mended.”
Saturday’s handball tournament at Rath Park raised money for suicide prevention. It also was a way to remember their friends and the legacies they left behind.
“Handball is a game we grew up with and that we enjoyed our entire lives. We just want everyone to have fun, good memories today,” says Gino’s friend Anthony Piretto.
Suicide Prevention Week starts Sunday and runs through next weekend. World Suicide Prevention Day is Monday.
